Root canal treatment is a restorative treatment that removes the infected root of a tooth. Your dentist will use a dental x-ray to assess whether the tooth has become damaged or infected due to decay or injury.
The soft tissue inside the tooth is called pulp. If this becomes infected, it can spread to other teeth in the root canal system and you may require a root canal treatment to remove the infected or damaged soft tissue.
The procedure removes the infected soft tissue and clears the root canal ready for filling. Sometimes a crown will be added to the tooth (a cap that goes over the tooth) to help strengthen it.
